EDWARD "ED" VAUGHN
Edward ‘Ed’ Vaughn, a businessman, community organizer, author, entrepreneur, civil rights leader, activist, mentor, politician, visionary, historian, educator, trailblazer, and playwright, was born in Abbeville, Alabama, to Posie and Ivory Vaughn. He was the youngest of two children. The Vaughn family later moved to Dothan, Alabama, where Edward graduated from Carver High School in 1951. In 1955, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government from Fisk University, where he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Eta Psi Chapter, served as campus NAACP chapter president, and later spent a year at the University of Illinois Law School.
Ed moved to Detroit, Michigan, in 1956, working various jobs, including at restaurants and the U.S. Post Office, while selling books from his car. This book-selling venture eventually led to opening a bookstore, with the bestseller being 100 Years of Lynching by Ralph Ginzburg.
In 1957, he married Wilma Lathion in Detroit, Michigan, in a ceremony at her Aunt Polly’s home. Edward served in the United States Army from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1963. Known as “Mwalimu,” Swahili for “teacher,” Ed also taught in the Detroit Public Schools, empowering and educating children.
In 1965, along with Polly Rawls, Edward opened Vaughn’s Bookstore in Detroit. It was the first Black-owned bookstore in Detroit and the second in the United States. Vaughn’s became a hub for Black intellectuals and activists, such as Rosa Parks and poet Nikki Giovanni, and played a key role in the Black Power movement for 40 years. Recently, Vaughn’s Bookstore was inducted into the National Park Service Registry to preserve its rich history in underrepresented communities. He also owned the Langston Hughes Theatre on Livernois Avenue, showcasing Black films, musicals, and plays, such as Season’s Reasons by Ron Milner and Little Red, along with community educational programs. Ever the visionary, Vaughn conceptualized “Africana World,” a theme park modeled after Disney World.
Ed was a founding member of The Shrine of the Black Madonna in Detroit, a Black Christian Nationalist movement that gained international recognition. He commissioned the painting of the Black Madonna and co-founded The Pan-African Congress, an organization that supported African nations seeking liberation from white minority rule.
Ed served in the Michigan House of Representatives for the 8th district from 1979 to 1980 and the 4th district from 1995 to 2000. He also served as the Executive Assistant to Detroit’s first Black mayor, Mayor Coleman A. Young, always remaining “unbought and unbossed” in politics. Dedicated to community service, Ed served as president of the NAACP’s Alabama Conference in 2001. As a founding member of NBCAR, in 2001, Ed established Dothan’s first residential historic district. As a member of Parks Chapel AME, he launched the “Harambee Shout It Out Challenge” in 2015, raising funds for the community.
Ed, an arbiter of the culture, was featured in documentaries such as Eyes on The Prize, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks, and Summer of Soul, a 2021 documentary by musician Questlove about Black music festivals in 1969. As a playwright and author, Ed wrote many plays and, in 1974, published Red, Black and Green: The History and Meaning of the Black Liberation Flag. His writings have been donated to the library of Wayne State University, a public research university in Detroit, Michigan.
Ed spent his retirement years enjoying life with his family and friends in Dothan, AL, and Atlanta, GA. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Posie and Ivory Vaughn, and his sister, Juanita Vaughn Brown.
Ed leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Wilma Vaughn, six children—Johnny (deceased), Eric, Randall, Sybil, Attallah and Sahran—two sons-in-law, Earl and Todd and two daughters-in-law, Durene and Adele. He also leaves behind his dear friend, Ms. Nettie Bryant, his grandchildren, Wynton, Peyton, Ananda, Bilal, Emil, Khari, Kofi, Exodus, Anna, Kimberly and Kristy, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Edward Vaughn’s legacy is one of rich history, a deep sense of Black pride, empowerment and an abiding love for his community. As he often said, “The struggle continues.”

and another new full-service laundromat. They also found time to take classes at Wallace Community College, where they learned ceramics, upholstery and leather crafting. They lived in Kinsey until Frank passed.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF KIRT CLARK
(Date of Passing: Sunday, August 6, 2023)
With a heavy heart, we remember Kirt Clark, a man of quiet strength whose presence spoke volumes to those who truly knew him. Kirt's unassuming nature meant you might not have noticed him unless he wanted you to, but those he allowed into his world were considered truly special by him.
Kirt's love language was one of actions and meaningful gifts. He showed his care and affection through gestures that spoke volumes. It was not uncommon to find a handful of quarters, saved over months, in random places in his daughter's apartment after a visit—reminders of his thoughtfulness. His love knew no bounds; he surprised Reva with a new car for her daily commutes after a simple invitation to go for a ride.
But there was another side to Kirt, a side you wouldn't want to cross. A fierce protector of his family, he showed an unyielding strength when it came to defending his loved ones. His disabled daughter's access needs were not to be disregarded, and any teacher who dared disrespect her would find themselves at the receiving end of the infamous "Kirt Clark finger," a gesture that spoke volumes without uttering a single word.
Kirt's journey was one of unwavering commitment to his family. As a husband, he shared 45 years of a loving and enduring partnership with Reva. As a father, he displayed remarkable strength and guidance to his two daughters, Donna and Latoya. His bond with his grandson, Durrell, was a beacon of his role as a loving grandfather and mentor. The loss of his granddaughter, Shanekia, left a void he carried in his heart.
Kirt's connection with his sisters Rachel Woods, Alice Vincent, and Francis Curry ran deep, shaping the foundation of a family that thrived on love and mutual support. Together, they wove a tapestry of memories that will forever endure.
As we gather to remember and celebrate Kirt's life, we reflect on the unique tapestry he wove. His impact on those around him was profound, a testament to his quiet strength and unwavering devotion. Kirt Clark's legacy will forever be etched in our hearts, a beacon of love, protection, and cherished memories.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11:00 AM at First Missionary Baptist Church, located at 370 Chickasaw St, Dothan, AL 36303. Many of you know Daryl as a giver. Every Mother’s Day, he would gift each mother with a special gift. Each Christmas, he hosted the Annual Senior Citizen’s Banquets in Gordon. According to 2 Corinthians 9:7 God loves a cheerful giver. As a Christian, Daryl did as the Bible mandated by visiting the sick as shut-in. Charity best described the heart of Daryl as he showed love, support, and monetary gifts unselfishly.
